May 2010 News

There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.’

We’ve had it good so far this term with amazingly warm and sunny weather. The extra area we have been given by the Nelson City Council has made a huge difference to the way children have been playing, particularly the boys. The trucks and wheel barrows are in constant use as children push them from one side of the area to the other, around the shrubs, collecting rocks, making roads and generally involved in very purposeful play.

The main focus of our planning this term is to help children develop a love of and link to our natural environment. This has come from the children’s interest in Autumn changes and bringing in their ‘treasures’ from Isel Park. Debbie and Teresa have had several visits to Isel Park which have inspired some amazing creative art work from children. A visit to Isel Park with all the afternoon children was also enjoyed by children and parents/whanau. Other trips to different natural environments for children to explore and develop their own ideas are being planned.

Our ideas and thinking around these excursions have been motivated by a recent presentation we had on Germany’s Forest Kindergartens. (For more info google Forest Kindergartens.)
